Well before we get into the benefits of an ultimate weight loss exercise,  let’s look at what HIIT stands for, which is High-Intensity Interval Training and is being used by many people to achieve their weight loss goals.

HIIT is a fairly simple, though a very intense workout out that consists of work and rest cycles. Work and rest cycles are very short lasting between 30 and 60 seconds each. The idea is to work out intensely during the work cycle while still working out during the rest cycle, but, at a pace which allows you to catch your breath.

For example, you could sprint for 30 seconds followed by a 30-second jog that will allow you to catch your breath. Then simply repeat the cycle.

Another example is you can run on a treadmill for 40 seconds, then walk or jog much slower for 20 seconds.

There are also various specific exercise moves that can be incorporated into an HIIT workout that will work all the muscle groups.

High-Intensity Interval Training and Fat Loss

Unlike most exercises which burn carbohydrates for the first 60 minutes of exercise, it has been proven that high-intensity interval training actually burns fat almost immediately. The vigorous intensity of HIIT helps to boost your metabolism and keeps it elevated for up to 48 hours after the workout has been completed. This means you continue to burn fat even when you are not working out!

How Often Should You Use High-Intensity Interval Training?

It is recommended that you use high-intensity interval training up to three times a week and allow your body to rest on the days in between your workouts. As you become more physically fit you will be able to increase your training to 4-5 times a week.

How Long Does It Take?

Many people find that they are overweight because they simply cannot find an hour per day to exercise. With the responsibilities of work and family, fitness tends to be put on a back burner. But when you do high-intensity interval training, you can exercise just 20 minutes per day, three times per week and see better results than if you were using aerobic exercise or cardio machines every day.

What About My Heart? Is HIIT Safe?

You must always discuss any new diet or exercise program with your doctor but interval training is very good for heart health. It can reduce your blood pressure and strengthen your heart. If you have heart disease or high blood pressure you need to talk to your doctor before using high-intensity interval training because it does temporarily elevate your blood pressure and can cause increased stress on your heart.

How Does HIIT Compare To Other Workouts?hiit

There is no comparison when it comes to HIIT and other workouts because when you are doing a regular workout, you are burning calories right then. The great thing about HIIT is that your body will continue to burn calories up to 48 hours after you have finished your workout. There is no other workout routine that will do this.

What About Diet?

First, you want to make sure that you do not do HIIT on an empty stomach, so you want to eat something light about one and one-half hours before you begin your high-intensity interval training workouts. Other than that if you are trying to lose weight then you should eat healthy food, and watch your calorie intake. Lean protein, fresh fruit, and vegetables are always recommended. You should never starve yourself. Your body will need the fuel in order to complete your training session and if your body does not have enough fuel it will begin burning your muscle instead of burning fat which is not what you want to happen. Each meal should include a lean protein, and vegetables. In no time you will see significant weight loss results.

Take It Slow When Interval Training

Don’t feel discouraged if HIIT seems very difficult at first, it is not easy. You might benefit from starting off with simple cardio, like exercise bikes, treadmills or an elliptical machine if you are out of shape and have not worked out regularly and then graduate to HIIT once you are build up strength and endurance.
